If you're moving to South Charlotte, the school question usually comes before the house question. It's also where the region gets confusing. "South Charlotte" covers parts of two counties in North Carolina and one in South Carolina, so neighbors a few miles apart can be in completely different school districts with different calendars, lotteries and enrollment rules.
This guide explains which district serves which area, how to find the assigned school for an exact address, and how magnet lotteries, school choice and charter schools work. We don't rank schools or rate individual campuses here. School performance data changes every year, and the best decision depends on your child, so we point you to the official sources instead.
Which district serves which area
The county a home sits in decides the public school district:
- Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) serves Mecklenburg County, which covers our coverage areas of Ballantyne, SouthPark, Steele Creek, Pineville and the Mecklenburg side of Matthews.
- Union County Public Schools (UCPS) serves Union County, which includes Waxhaw, Weddington and Marvin.
- Lancaster County School District (LCSD) serves Lancaster County, South Carolina, which includes Indian Land.
One common trap: a mailing address doesn't always tell you the county. Some homes with a Charlotte or Matthews mailing address sit across a county line. Before you fall in love with a house, look up the parcel on the county's property records and confirm which county and school district it's in.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools
CMS is big. It's the second-largest district in North Carolina and the 16th-largest in the country, with about 140,000 students, according to CMS Fast Facts. The district lists 101 elementary schools, 16 K-8 schools, 29 middle schools, two combined middle and high schools, 33 high schools and four alternative schools, organized into 11 performance areas.
Finding your home school
Your child's home school is based on the address of the parent or guardian, CMS explains. You can type an address into the district's Find My School map or call CMS Student Placement at (980) 343-5335.
Boundaries aren't permanent. CMS updates them from time to time through community workshops, public hearings and school board votes, especially when new schools open or existing ones get crowded. If you're buying in a fast-growing part of the county, ask whether any boundary changes are under discussion.
Magnets and School Choice
CMS also offers magnet and choice programs. CMS lists themes such as International Baccalaureate, computer science, aviation, the arts, STEM, world languages, Montessori and early college. Families apply through the School Choice lottery, and students get priority for programs in their transportation zone, according to CMS.
For the 2027-28 school year, the CMS key dates page lists an application window of Nov. 2 to Dec. 11, 2026, with results on Jan. 5, 2027. We covered the details in our story on the CMS School Choice Lottery for 2027-28. Questions about programs go to CMS Planning and Program Choice at (980) 343-6246 or schoolchoice@cms.k12.nc.us.
Enrolling in CMS
New students register online. CMS asks for:
- The student's birth certificate.
- Two proofs of residency in Mecklenburg County.
- Immunization records.
- A North Carolina Health Assessment, due within 30 days of a student's first day.
Children must be 5 on or before Aug. 31 to start kindergarten.
Union County Public Schools
UCPS serves Waxhaw, Weddington, Marvin and the rest of Union County. Like CMS, it assigns students to a home school based on where the parent lives (district Policy 4-19, with assignment rules in Policy 4-13), UCPS says.
Finding your home school
Enter an address in the UCPS Edulog School Finder, which reflects 2026-27 boundaries, or browse the district's attendance boundary maps. Questions go to UCPS Student Assignment at student.assignment@ucps.k12.nc.us or 704.296.1005, ext. 4090.
UCPS also accepts transfer requests for specific reasons. The district lists educational need, change of residence, home construction, children of employees, medical necessity, extreme hardship, schools exceeding capacity, unsafe school choice and siblings.
School Choice and special programs
UCPS runs a School Choice lottery for schools at or below 85% of capacity. The list of schools changes every year. If your child gets a seat through School Choice, you provide transportation, because the district doesn't run buses for choice placements.
Applications go through the district's Scribbles portal. It lists the 2027-28 School Choice lottery window as Nov. 9 to Dec. 18, 2026, with a longer window, Nov. 9, 2026, to Feb. 26, 2027, for Benton Heights Elementary School of the Arts. The portal also lists special programs such as Dual Language Immersion, international programs, the School of the Arts, early college, health sciences, agrotechnology, the Central Academy of Technology and Arts (CATA) and sustainable energy.
Lancaster County School District (Indian Land)
Indian Land is in South Carolina, so families there deal with a different state's rules as well as a different district. Lancaster County School District has its own School Finder for checking an address. The registration page explains online registration, which asks for two proofs of residency, and how returning students re-enroll through PowerSchool. The district office is at 300 S. Catawba Street in Lancaster, 803-286-6972.
South Carolina's kindergarten cutoff is different from North Carolina's. A child must be 5 on or before Sept. 1 to attend public kindergarten, and kindergarten is compulsory for five-year-olds in South Carolina, though parents can request a waiver from the district, according to the South Carolina Department of Education.
Charter and private schools
Charter schools are another public option. In North Carolina, charters are public schools of choice run by nonprofit boards and funded mainly by state and local tax dollars, the NC Department of Public Instruction explains. They can't charge tuition, discriminate or be religiously affiliated. When applications exceed available seats, they must hold a lottery. You apply directly to each charter school, not through CMS or UCPS. NCDPI publishes the current list in its Active Charter Schools Report.
Private schools set their own admissions, tuition and calendars. Many open applications in the fall for the following school year, so contact schools early if private school is on your list.
A checklist for families
- Confirm the county and school district for the exact address before you sign a contract.
- Look up the assigned schools with the district's official tool, not a listing or a neighbor's memory.
- Ask whether boundary changes or new schools are being planned nearby.
- Mark lottery deadlines: CMS closes Dec. 11, 2026, and UCPS closes Dec. 18, 2026, for 2027-28.
- If you're crossing a state line, check the kindergarten cutoff and the enrollment documents for that state.
- Visit schools and talk with staff. Tours and open houses tell you more than any ranking.
