Ballantyne Wegmans Draws 25,000 Shoppers in Record Opening Day
By Tripper Wood ·
Wegmans' first Charlotte-area store didn't ease into Ballantyne. More than 25,000 customers came through the doors on opening day, Oct. 14, which the company says is the largest weekday debut in its history, according to Progressive Grocer.
The basics
- Where: 11550 North Community House Road in Ballantyne
- Hours: 6 a.m. to midnight daily
- Size: about 110,000 square feet, making it Wegmans' 115th store
What people bought first
Over the first four days, bakery items led sales, with Cookieland chocolate chip and cut-out cookies at the top. The hot bars, sushi, subs and pizza drove the prepared-food side, and strip steaks, charcuterie and Parmigiano Reggiano moved quickly. A few Western New York staples found Charlotte fans too, including Zweigle's hot dogs and sponge candy.
What's inside
The store has a Hot Bowls station run by the executive chef, a dry-aging case and Prime Angus beef, cheeses aged in Wegmans' own cheese caves, and roughly 2,000 wines and nearly 1,000 beers. There are 15 staffed registers and 18 self-checkout lanes, plus five more self-checkouts in the Market Café. Online orders can be picked up curbside or delivered in as little as an hour.
Community ties
Wegmans says the Ballantyne team has put more than $30,000 into local donations and sponsorships, and the company gave $5,000 to Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina at its groundbreaking as the start of an ongoing partnership.
