Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools is slowing down its plan to change school hours at four schools for the 2027-28 school year, three of them in South Charlotte. At Tuesday's school board meeting, interim Operations Officer Nicole Portee said "no final decisions have been made" and that the district is willing to extend its timeline, WFAE reported.

Which schools are affected

The CMS bell time changes page lists these 2027-28 hours:

  • South Academy of International Languages (SAIL), 8300 Nations Ford Road: 9:15 a.m. to 4:15 p.m.
  • Sedgefield Middle: 9:15 a.m. to 4:15 p.m.
  • Nations Ford Elementary: 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • Mint Hill Middle: 9:15 a.m. to 4:15 p.m.

SAIL, the district's K-8 language immersion magnet, currently starts at 8:15 a.m. and lets out at 3:15 p.m., The Charlotte Mercury reported. CMS says the new schedules would take effect in August 2027.

Why CMS wants the change

CMS says moving bell times lets the same buses and drivers cover more routes as driver shortages continue. At the board's Sept. 22 meeting, district operations leaders said the driver workforce had dropped from 1,135 to 643 over the past decade while the number of schools grew, according to the Mercury.

Why parents pushed back

SAIL draws students from across Mecklenburg County, and parents told the board a 4:15 p.m. dismissal would leave children riding buses through rush hour and clash with work schedules. Some said they would leave the program. Several parents asked CMS to keep the current hours and use consolidated or express bus stops for magnet riders instead.

What happens next

Portee said CMS transportation staff have held three engagement sessions at SAIL and one at Sedgefield. Surveys are going to families and staff at the affected schools, and the district is looking at alternatives such as consolidated or community bus stops. The next family session is at Nations Ford Elementary on Thursday, Oct. 29, from 6 to 7 p.m., with Mint Hill Middle on Nov. 4, according to CMS. The district's outreach period runs through Dec. 18.

Families weighing magnet options should also note that CMS School Choice Lottery applications open Nov. 2. SAIL is on Nations Ford Road in southwest Charlotte.
