A proposed Life Time athletic club in Indian Land took its first step forward. Lancaster County's Planning Commission voted 6-0 on Oct. 20 to recommend approval of a rezoning for the project, according to ZoneWire's record of the meeting and a Citizen Portal summary. Nothing is final yet. The request still needs votes from Lancaster County Council.

What is proposed

The case (RZ20261357) would rezone about 12.96 acres on Charlotte Highway (U.S. 521) at Red Ventures Drive from Mixed Use to Regional Business. Citing the planning commission agenda, the Charlotte Business Journal reported via WSOC that the rezoning would allow a two-story, 93,000-square-foot private recreation facility with more than 50,000 square feet of outdoor pools and decking. The land is owned by Lancaster Real Estate Group, in care of Red Ventures, according to county property records cited in that report.

What the commission heard

County planning staff recommended approval and said the request fits the county's comprehensive plan and future land use map, Citizen Portal reported. The applicant asked for a 50-foot height allowance, saying the club's grand entry needs it.

What happens next

The rezoning goes to Lancaster County Council, which has not scheduled a final vote, according to ZoneWire. Because Indian Land is unincorporated, County Council makes the call, not a town board. Life Time has not announced pricing, a construction schedule or an opening date.

If it is built, the club would sit a short drive from Ballantyne and Waxhaw, just south of the North Carolina line. Residents who want to follow the case can check the Lancaster County Planning Commission page and council agendas.
