If you drive NC 16 (Providence Road) late at night or before dawn in Union County, plan another route for the next few months. NCDOT is closing all lanes in both directions between Bonds Grove Church Road and Gray Byrum Road every night from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. The closures started Sunday, Oct. 25, and are scheduled to run through Jan. 8, 2027, according to the state's DriveNC traffic listing, as The Waxhaws Dispatch reported.
What the work is for
Crews are widening the northbound side of NC 16 to make room for a future left-turn lane, with a traffic signal, onto Bonds Grove Church Road. Work can happen during the day as well, but the DriveNC listing says the lanes are only closed overnight. The closure applies seven days a week.
No posted detour
The DriveNC listing does not include a detour. Drivers who use this stretch of Providence Road after 9 p.m. or before 6 a.m., including early commuters heading toward Weddington and Charlotte, should check DriveNC before leaving and allow extra time.
Who is doing the job
NCDOT awarded the contract for improvements at the NC 16 and Bonds Grove Church Road intersection (project U-5769AA) to King Asphalt Inc. of Liberty, S.C., for $778,799, according to the department's Sept. 1 award letter.
The bigger NC 16 plan
This intersection project is separate from NCDOT's larger plan to widen NC 16 between Rea Road and Waxhaw Parkway (project U-5769). A Waxhaw Board of Commissioners presentation in September 2025 put construction on that project around 2030, with completion expected between 2033 and 2035, the Dispatch reported. For the Rea Road and Providence Road plans closer to Charlotte, see our earlier report on the Rea Road extension.
