Shoppers in Weddington and Marvin are about to get another grocery option. Publix will open its Village Commons store at 6460 Weddington Road in Wesley Chapel at 7 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 4, The Waxhaws Dispatch reported.

The basics

  • Size: 50,325 square feet
  • Jobs: about 140
  • Location: Village Commons Phase III, at the corner of Weddington Road and Waxhaw-Indian Trail Road
  • Inside: Publix's store page lists a pharmacy with a drive-thru, wine and beer, and bakery, deli, seafood, meat, produce and floral departments.

Union County's third Publix

The Wesley Chapel store joins Union County's two existing Publix locations: Marvin Gardens on Providence Road South in Marvin and Shoppes at Hanfield Village on Old Charlotte Highway in Monroe. The new store is less than six miles east of the Marvin location.

More storefronts on the way

Publix anchors Village Commons Phase III, the final phase of the Aston Properties shopping center. The developer says the phase adds about 110,000 square feet of retail, dining and service space. Tenants listed in its leasing materials include Ace Hardware, Novant Health, Heartland Dental, Chase Bank, Hickory Tavern, Greco Fresh Grille, Mattress Firm and Hand & Stone. About 22,000 square feet was still available as of the Dispatch's report.

Weddington Road (N.C. 84) through this area is also the corridor in NCDOT's widening plans. See our story on the Rea Road extension and N.C. 84 widening.
