The votes from Tuesday's midterm election are in. All results below are unofficial until county boards of elections certify them; Union County's canvass is scheduled for Nov. 13, according to The Waxhaws Dispatch. Here's what matters most for Ballantyne, Matthews, Waxhaw, Weddington and the rest of south Charlotte.
Charlotte's $425 million bond package passed
Charlotte voters approved all three city bond questions, with 100% of precincts reporting, according to WCCB's results page:
- Housing bonds: 61.9% yes (199,281 to 122,477)
- Neighborhood improvement bonds: 66.6% yes (214,184 to 107,632)
- Transportation bonds: 63.7% yes (204,868 to 116,785)
N.C. House District 105: McCool beats Cotham
Democrat Ken McCool, a former Matthews town commissioner, defeated Republican Rep. Tricia Cotham 57.1% to 42.9% with all 18 precincts reporting, The Charlotte Observer reported. Cotham was elected as a Democrat and switched to the Republican Party in 2023.
Mecklenburg County Commission
Democrat Charles DeLoach was unopposed for the District 5 seat in south Mecklenburg, succeeding Commissioner Laura Meier, who did not seek reelection, according to the Observer. The board will remain all-Democratic, with three new members: DeLoach, Morris McAdoo (District 1) and Monifa Drayton (District 2), WFAE reported. Sheriff Garry McFadden and District Attorney Spencer Merriweather were reelected without opposition.
Union County: jail bond rejected, three new school board members
Union County voters turned down the $200 million bond for a new county jail, according to the Observer's election-night coverage. The county had estimated the bond would raise property taxes about $31.10 a year per $100,000 of value. A "no" vote doesn't rule out a future jail project or other financing, the Dispatch noted. For background, see our jail bond explainer.
On the Union County Board of Education, Republicans won all three contested races, WFAE reported: Linda Robinson won the at-large seat over Alexis Stadler, Stephen Smith beat Brittany Cabuno in District 4, and Brandi Smith beat Evan Metaxatos in District 6. Barry Tucker was unopposed in District 3. Our preview of those races has more on the candidates.
Statewide
Democrat Roy Cooper won North Carolina's U.S. Senate race with 58.7% of the vote over Republican Michael Whatley, per WCCB. All three proposed constitutional amendments (an income tax cap, a property tax levy limit and a photo ID requirement) were leading with "yes" votes in Mecklenburg County returns tracked by Decision Desk HQ. Read our amendments guide for what each would do. Full statewide results are on the State Board of Elections results site.
