Voters in Waxhaw, Weddington, Marvin and the rest of Union County will help reshape the Union County Board of Education on Tuesday, Nov. 3. Three seats are contested, and because three current members are leaving, the board is guaranteed at least three new faces, WFAE reported. Republicans currently hold an 8-1 majority on the board.

The candidates below come from the Union County Board of Elections' official Notice of Election, with names as they appear on the ballot.

At-large seat

  • Linda O. Robinson (Republican)
  • Alexis Stadler (Democrat)

Board Chair Jimmy Bention Sr. didn't seek re-election, which opened this seat, according to WFAE. Robinson won the March Republican primary with 56.5% of the vote, beating incumbent Sandra Greene, Wilden Harbour and Raven Faherty, per Ballotpedia. The Waxhaws Dispatch, citing the candidates' campaign websites, describes Robinson as a retired math teacher who helped open Porter Ridge High School, and Stadler as a Waxhaw resident and former school counselor who now works as a mental health counselor.

District 4

  • Brittany Cabuno (Democrat)
  • Stephen Smith (Republican)

Greene gave up this seat to run at-large, so there's no incumbent. Cabuno won the Democratic primary over Derrick Lewis, according to Ballotpedia.

District 6

  • Brandi Smith (Republican)
  • Evan Metaxatos (Democrat)

Republican member Kathy Heintel decided not to run again, WFAE reported, leaving this seat open as well.

District 3

  • Barry Tucker (Republican), the incumbent, is unopposed.

Before you vote

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools has no board seats on this year's ballot, WFAE noted, so these races matter most for families on the Union County side of the line.
