Work has started on the shopping center at Cadia Village Matthews, the 84-acre mixed-use community at Stallings Road and Idlewild Road in Matthews. Developer Pappas Properties announced the groundbreaking on Oct. 6.
The Publix
- The anchor is a Publix of about 50,000 square feet with a full-service pharmacy and a drive-thru.
- It is expected to employ about 150 people and open in the fourth quarter of 2027, according to Pappas.
- Publix signed its lease in July 2025. A Publix spokesperson said in the announcement that the company looks forward to welcoming customers "when the store opens next fall."
What else is planned
Pappas says the Retail Village will also have medical offices, a bank, fast-casual and sit-down restaurants, and neighborhood shops and services. They will surround a Village Green with a performance stage for live music, community events, outdoor movie nights and sports broadcasts. Choate Construction is the general contractor.
The development includes 570 homes for sale and for rent, including single-family homes, townhomes and apartments, the Charlotte Observer reported. David Weekley Homes is building the for-sale homes, and sales started this summer, Pappas said. The plans also include active-adult (55+) apartments and cottage homes, along with sidewalks, trails and parks.
More grocery competition in South Charlotte
The Matthews store follows a busy fall for grocery openings nearby, including the Ballantyne Wegmans and the Publix opening Nov. 4 at Wesley Chapel Village Commons. Publix opened its first North Carolina store in Ballantyne in 2014, the Observer noted.
